McAfee in Assisi, Italy (2025)

"Writing is much like a marriage: first there is infatuation with the idea; then one learns to love what is really there."

Aaron McAfee is an American author and columnist of Mexican and British descent. As a child, McAfee struggled to communicate and was a poor student, but found in writing something surprisingly natural—something that made the noise go quiet. His mother, formerly an English teacher, suggested he continue pursuing writing in spite of this struggle. McAfee draws influence from writers such as Thomas Hardy, Graham Greene, and Evelyn Waugh

The Black Friars, his debut novel, was inspired by his travels to the University of Oxford, where by chance he encountered the Dominican Blackfriars and was deeply moved to explore the inner lives of monastics. Aaron credits the encounter as being instrumental in affirming his return to the Catholic faith, and later would spend time among the Claretian priests in Rome, a Spanish order focused on missionary work with a history of martyrdom.

His articles have been featured in Crisis Magazine, and he additionally hosts Escape Velocity, a podcast featuring notable screenwriters and film directors.

He lives in Nashville, Tennessee but is hardly ever there.
